Sponge Divers Find... a Rusty Lump
In 1901, sponge divers working off the coast of the Greek island Antikythera stumbled upon a Roman shipwreck dating to around 70–60 BCE. Among the marble statues, glassware, and coins was an unremarkable corroded mass of bronze — roughly the size of a shoebox. Nobody thought much of it. It sat in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens for months, just another piece of maritime junk waiting to be catalogued.

37 Gears, One Hand Crank
The mechanism's genius lies in its differential gear train — a technology historians believed was invented in the 16th century. By turning a single hand crank on the side, users set the entire cosmos in motion. The front dial displayed the zodiac and the Egyptian calendar. The back featured two spiral dials: the upper Metonic dial (235 lunar months = 19 solar years) and the lower Saros dial for eclipse prediction. Inscribed text — thousands of characters, some barely a millimeter tall — served as a user manual, explaining exactly how to read the heavens.

Hipparchus of Rhodes
The Roman writer Cicero described two similar 'sphere' devices: one built by Archimedes, another by Posidonius of Rhodes. Archimedes lived in the 3rd century BCE — earlier than most estimates for the mechanism — but his engineering genius makes him the romantic favorite. Some scholars believe the mechanism descends from his designs.
The leading scientific candidate. Hipparchus (c. 190–120 BCE) was the greatest astronomer of the Hellenistic era — he calculated eclipse cycles and discovered the precession of the equinoxes. The mechanism's use of Hipparchus's lunar theory strongly points to him or his workshop on Rhodes, a known center of astronomical study.
