Combined with widespread belief in St. Vitus's power to curse sinners with dancing, this distress manifested as a mass psychogenic illness — a conversion disorder expressed through culturally scripted symptoms. The trance state provided a dissociative escape from unbearable material conditions.
An alternative physiological theory points to ergot, a toxic fungus (Claviceps purpurea) that grows on rye and produces alkaloids similar to LSD. Ergotism can cause convulsions, hallucinations, and involuntary muscle spasms. However, this theory faces serious challenges: ergot poisoning typically restricts blood flow to the extremities, making sustained dancing physically improbable, and it does not explain the patterned, socially contagious nature of the outbreak.
