A Gorilla Walks Through a Basketball Game
Harvard University, 1999: Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons create a short video of students passing basketballs
Two teams — white shirts versus black shirts — pass balls in a confined indoor space
The video lasts under 60 seconds; the action is continuous and visually busy
At the midpoint, a person in a full gorilla suit enters the frame, stops, faces the camera, beats their chest, and exits
The gorilla is fully visible for approximately 9 seconds — unmissable, or so it seems

The Task: Count the Passes, Ignore Everything Else
Participants are instructed to count only passes made by players in WHITE shirts (or, in a second condition, BLACK shirts)
The task demands focused, sustained attention: distinguishing teams, tracking a moving ball, maintaining a mental tally
The gorilla is never mentioned — the instructions make no reference to anything unusual
After viewing, participants report their pass count and then answer: 'Did you notice anything unusual while watching?'

Inattentional Blindness

Attention Is a Spotlight, Not a Floodlight
Inattentional blindness arises because focused attention creates a cognitive tunnel: we consciously perceive only what we deliberately direct our attention toward. The brain is not passively recording the full visual field — it actively filters and constructs our experience based on what we judge relevant. When participants count basketball passes, their attentional spotlight narrows to the ball, the white shirts, and the mental tally. The gorilla — however conspicuous — falls outside that spotlight. Critically, this is not a defect in our cognitive architecture but an adaptive feature: without attentional filtering, we would be overwhelmed by sensory input. The cost of focus is blindness to the unexpected.
